Farmers from Europe began arriving in the Texas Hill Country in the mid 1800's.  They began their new life in Texas by purchasing and building tiny houses.  With prosperity and growing families, the houses also grew.  Notice the three stages in the life of this German farmhouse, near Marble falls: one story, small two-story addition, large two-story addition.
