A huge lone star flag painted on the roof of a barn is a sign pointing us to the story that is as big as Texas. Perhaps the most recognized sign of Texas is the lone star flag. Several lone star flag designs were used as Texans fought for independence from Mexico. In 1836, Texas became a sovereign nation. In 1839, leaders of the Republic of Texas adopted the red, white, and blue design we see today. When Texas was admitted to the United States in 1845, the national flag of Texas became the state flag of Texas.
