People everywhere connect longhorn cattle with Texas.  Longhorns are hardy descendants of cattle brought to Texas by Spanish explorers in the 1500s.  By the end of the Civil War, vast herds of longhorns roamed South Texas.  After the war, enterprising Texans , faced with a bankrupt Texas economy, gathered stray longhorns and drove them from Texas to railheads in Kansas.  The Texas longhorn image can be seen today on buildings, police cars, and equipment of Texas athletic teams. The scene below is in Central Texas.
