One of the signs of Texas is the open road. So, I painted a scene along Route 66 in the Texas Panhandle. The Texas portion of Route 66 is a 175-mile stretch of flat highway that seems to run in an almost-straight line between Oklahoma and New Mexico. Created in 1926 by the U.S. Congress as the first national highway, Route 66 stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles. This scene pictured is west of Amarillo. Big sky, straight road, lone windmill and stock tank remind us that cows still graze along the open road in Texas.
